Quy Huy

Associate Professor of Strategy

Quy Nguyen Huy's research links emotion and time to strategic processes in large organisations. He also seeks to understand small organisations by tracking how entrepreneurs actually acquire resources to build their emerging organisations. Before joining academia, he worked for 16 years in various managerial functions with several large information technology firms in North America, spanning management of technology, sales and marketing, and corporate finance. He holds the designations of Professional Engineer and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Huy's research on strategic change won several international awards and was published in journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly and the Academy of Management Review. Two of his articles won the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management, including the William H. Newman Award for distinctive contribution to knowledge using rigorous and creative research design. His doctoral dissertation was chosen as one of the best five by the Business Policy and Strategy division of the Academy.

Harvard Business Review chose Huy's "In Praise of Middle Managers" as lead article in its September 2001 issue and featured it in its annual "List of Breakthrough Ideas for Today's Business Agenda." Huy's research has been widely reported in the international press, such as Financial Times (UK), the Sunday Telegraph (UK), le Figaro (France), La Tribune (France), Les Echos (France), Observer (Denmark), The Globe and Mail (Canada), The Chicago Tribune (USA). He is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA in 2005-2006 and has been writing a book to be published by Harvard Business School Press.

Huy has been involved in executive teaching, development, and coaching for a wide range of profit and non-profit organisations worldwide. In addition to teaching strategic management in MBA and executive programmes, Huy has been actively involved in developing new education concepts and pedagogical techniques to address the development needs of managers with extensive business experience. He currently directs the International Masters Programme for Practicing Managers (IMPM), a leadership development programme linking INSEAD with four other business schools worldwide. IMPM is described extensively in Henry Mintzberg's book, "Developing Managers, Not MBAs."

Huy holds a PhD in management from McGill University and was educated in Vietnam, France, and Canada.
